Use These 3 Tips to Stay Safe While Driving in The Winter

Smid Law Dec. 28, 2020

Winter is here, and for Indiana, that means snow, ice, sleet, and cold weather. If you’re planning to drive in these conditions, it’s essential that you take steps to be safe on the roads.

Winter weather is something most people in Indiana are used to, but if this is your first winter driving or you just need a refresher, here are three tips to help you avoid crashes and to stay safe.

  1. Check your tires first

The first thing you need to do is to check your tires. Good winter snow tires are important because they have large grooves and solid tread to help maintain contact with the roads. In slick conditions, these tires are essential, because they guide slush, water, and snow away from the tires and keep contact with the road’s surface better, preventing slipping and sliding.

  1. Get to know the weather before you go

Before you head out, another good idea is to check the weather report. You need to know if more snow is expected, if there is black ice, if the roads have been cleared or if heavy storms are headed your way. Knowing what is going on outside at the moment and in the hours when you will be out is necessary, so you can bring the right supplies and be sure you take safe routes to get where you’re going.

  1. Go slow and prepare for longer travel times

Finally, remember to go slowly and to prepare for longer travel times. If your drive normally takes 20 minutes, give yourself 40 or even an hour to get there when the roads are bad. Plan for backed-up traffic, slick roads, and conditions where it may be harder to see than usual. That way, you can travel as slowly as needed and still arrive on time.

By maintaining your tires, knowing the weather conditions, and giving yourself more time to get where you want to go, you’ll be in a better position to drive safely and avoid crashes. If you are hit, prepare to stay where you are and to seek medical attention immediately.
